Why People Shy Away from Mental Health Issues

Here are three of the top reasons why many shy away from mental health issues in themselves as well as others:

 1. It’s Personal

Many people shy away from helping others who display signs of mental illness because they consider it a personal issue or a family matter, or they simply do not understand how crippling and over powering a mental issue can be. As humans, we all need to understand and recognise the fact that it’s OK for people to say, “I’m not ok, I need help” When you have a broken arm you see a doctor, it should be the same for all mental issues.

 2. Fear and Shame

Often, people are afraid of getting too close, or too involved. And so, they don’t. When it comes to themselves, one of the most common reasons for not seeking help or treatment is the shame from negative stigma and discrimination associated with having a mental illness. Not wanting to be labelled as ‘crazy’ or ‘mentally ill’ and how that may impact their career, relationships and other life goals is one of the biggest reasons for many not seeking treatment.

3. Hopelessness

The demoralisation that coincides with mental illness can be one of the biggest road blocks for those in need of treatment. Their belief that there is no solution and that they will never get better can often be due to depression or hopelessness. As such, often the people who are in need of it the most don’t seek help or stop their current treatment. With this in mind, it is vital to be open and encouraging with those diagnosed or showing signs of mental illness.

At Southport Metro Medical’s Gold Coast centre, we strive towards a community that embraces and maintains mental, social and emotional wellbeing for all people.

If you or someone you know is experiencing signs and symptoms of any mental disorders or would like further information on available treatment and be directed to the relevant people to talk to, please come and talk with one of our General Practitioners about various options.

What We Give Back To Society

Thank you for supporting our clinic by being part of our community and patient base. In 2015, 2016 and again in 2017 we have been proud sponsors of and avid supporters of children in sport across many disciplines. As parents ourselves we recognise the importance of active body, active minds and promoting healthy living from a young age.

Many of the clubs, teams and individuals we have sponsored over the years have excelled to win premierships or be selected as representatives of QLD, Australia and even New Zealand.

Among the young athletes have been many that have travelled both Nationally and Internationally to a vast range of locations. We always encourage those that have travelled to countries where children are less fortunate than themselves to share the experience by providing them with care packages and sports equipment for those children.

Additionally we also support teens, adults and seniors in Netball, Rugby Union, Basketball, Hockey, Equestrian and V8 supercars.
